Rutecki is an American-New Zealand artist living and working in Auckland and working in the intersection of conceptual art and craft or applied arts; with an emphasis in glass and lost wax casting techniques, ceramic and heritage plaster applications. Currently they are developing a body of work (fishergirl) within the language of traditional figure sculpture and focusing mainly on ceramic.
I’m currently working on a body of work I’m calling fisher-girl. They are figurative works, body parts that are broken off, inspired by old Victorian marble sculptures in Auckland parks that have undergone many repairs over the years. Some of them function as a fountain, evoking the connection or continuation of the body it’s dismembered from, and also references the functionality that public statues often have as as fountains. The work sometimes reference specific sculptures but are not copies but my own compositions using life models as reference.
My latest work is a wood-fired stoneware sculpture, Cross-Body Ride, and references The Wrestlers, a copy of a marble Roman 1st Century BCE copy of the lost 3rd century BCE Greek bronze sculpture. The Roman marble copy is attributed to Lysippus.
